Memorial by Deborah Tyler-Bennett   albert Ball
A moment’s silence, though this could be imagined.

Snow’s sugar, sifted on pub windows and shoppers’ faces,

settling like rumours on Albert Ball’s bronze trench-coat

as the angel at his shoulder whispers.

Castle grounds spread with wedding icing,

Standard Hill slippy with egg-white.

If not cold cast, Albert might shift left foot,

pull coat collars round young cheeks,

see knuckles redden.

Snow throws Nottingham lace covers on parked cars,

Court-house museums, new clubs where bouncers

older than Albert Ball pull Paul Smith collars

round grated cheeks.

Lovers scurry for neon doorways, a drunk slides

on his back, lies there laughing.  All hurry

towards bars chiming with mobiles.

Castle grounds, locked against vagrants.
