Leading ladies Part 1 – Autumn 2016

BookshelvesWe will study the portrayal of women in four novels, two written by men and two by women; consider the authors’ attitudes to their “leading ladies”, the environment which determines their lives, and how the obstacles which hold them back from self-fulfillment are tackled.

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
My Antonia by Willa Cather
The Odd Women by George Gissing
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys
