In 1209, the Church launched an extraordinary crusade against heresy in southern France. What followed was brutal even by medieval standards. This course explores the background to this traumatic intervention and asks: ‘What was the perceived heresy?’ How real was the threat to orthodoxy?’ before considering what the episode achieved.
