Each term we explore the visual culture (in a very wide sense) of a chosen area of the world. Recent areas studied have been Central and South America. This will be done by power point presentations, books, the internet, and any real life examples we can find. We will identify themes and styles which are important to the area and in a very loose way apply these to our own work. Although the course title implies a drawing and painting course, this is only a starting point. In reality any creativity is encouraged and lately students have produced beautiful work in various forms of textiles, papier-mâché, clay, and salt dough as well as paintings and drawings on different scales. You do not need to have any experience but an open-mindedness and curiosity will help you get the most out this course.
