Two artists: two paintings – Autumn 2017

van goghEach week we will study in depth two works of art. The works will be by different artists who may have been contemporaries, possibly rivals, or simply members of a movement. Alternatively they may be separated by hundreds of years. The works themselves may be famous or obscure. They may share common themes or subject matter, compositional approaches, or some external link. You will have no prior knowledge of the works and will therefore explore the possible connections between the two works and their creators from scratch. You will have access to primary sources, other works by the artists, and critical analysis to help you discuss and formulate ideas. This study in microcosm will enable you to find out about the art world these artists worked in and how their work fits into the broader trend of art history.

Drawing and painting the multicultural way – Autumn 2017

aboriginal artEach term we explore the visual culture (in a very wide sense) of a chosen area of the world. Recent areas studied have been Central and South America. This will be done by power point presentations, books, the internet, and any real life examples we can find. We will identify themes and styles which are important to the area and in a very loose way apply these to our own work. Although the course title implies a drawing and painting course, this is only a starting point. In reality any creativity is encouraged and lately students have produced beautiful work in various forms of textiles, papier-mâché, clay, and salt dough as well as paintings and drawings on different scales. You do not need to have any experience but an open-mindedness and curiosity will help you get the most out this course.
