Exploring Opera – Spring 2018

barber-895148_1920.jpgWe will watch, on dvd, a selection of operas, designed to give a representative view of the genre. By discussing the various aspects which make up an opera – e.g. music, libretto, singers, orchestra, production – you will be able to form a judgment about how opera does what it does. This will help you to watch opera with a greater understanding of how a composer’s initial idea ends up as a final production on the stage. It is a very interesting journey!

Drawing and Painting the Multicultural Way – Spring 2018

aboriginal artIn this course we will have a look at the art and craft of a chosen area of the world through looking at books, images from the internet, and original pieces where possible. This information will then be used as a springboard to inspire work of your own. Where a particular medium is important to the area studied we will have a go at that but generally a wide range of media will be available and anything may be tried (within reason!) For instance, when Indonesia was studied, batik was explored as a medium. The emphasis is on exploring your ideas and potential, but for those who require more structure, and technical help, that will be provided.

Drawing and painting the multicultural way – Autumn 2017

aboriginal artEach term we explore the visual culture (in a very wide sense) of a chosen area of the world. Recent areas studied have been Central and South America. This will be done by power point presentations, books, the internet, and any real life examples we can find. We will identify themes and styles which are important to the area and in a very loose way apply these to our own work. Although the course title implies a drawing and painting course, this is only a starting point. In reality any creativity is encouraged and lately students have produced beautiful work in various forms of textiles, papier-mâché, clay, and salt dough as well as paintings and drawings on different scales. You do not need to have any experience but an open-mindedness and curiosity will help you get the most out this course.
