Sheet musicStudents on this course will be able to chart the course of American art music starting with Dvorak’s arrival in New York in 1892 and progressing through a range of composers in America up to the present day. We will listen to and appreciate a range of musical compositions which represent the development of musical styles during this period. Students will have the opportunity to engage with the lives of composers and discuss their responses to the music in its historical context.

Exploring Opera – Spring 2018

By discussing the various aspects which make up an opera – e.g. music, libretto, singers, orchestra, production – you will be able to form a judgment about how opera does what it does. This will help you to watch opera with a greater understanding of how a composer’s initial idea ends up as a final production on the stage. It is a very interesting journey!

Music workshop – Autumn 2017

Sessions operate as band rehearsals, tackling accessible arrangements of a diverse musical repertoire for players of elementary to intermediate standard who have the ability to read standard music notation. Students supply their own instrument and music stand. All instruments welcome.

Max Reger: his life, times and music – Autumn 2016
