By discussing the various aspects which make up an opera – e.g. music, libretto, singers, orchestra, production – you will be able to form a judgment about how opera does what it does. This will help you to watch opera with a greater understanding of how a composer’s initial idea ends up as a final production on the stage. It is a very interesting journey!

Wagner’s Ring: music, myth and philosophy (Derby WEA Day School Summer 2016)

With a performance of all four operas of The Ring of the Nibelungen coming up in Nottingham in June, we will examine the work and place it in context. As well as the music, the first day includes sessions on Wagner the man, the theatre he built at Bayreuth and his interaction with philosophers of the period. Day two focuses more specifically on The Ring, dealing with the dramatic and musical issues that it raises.
