Most people use language expertly, with little conscious thought. How on earth do we do this? Awareness of the social, psychological and material basis of language can increase our enjoyment and understanding of it and make us still more effective. This day course will introduce you to topics such as the lexicon, conversation, politeness and language development, encouraging you to pose questions and explain your specific interests in language and its uses.

Drawing on local folkloric traditions, the course will use live art/performance to explore the traditions, rites and rituals that we use to mark our progress through life. Working with live artist and folklorist Chris Lewis-Jones, you will share your experience of rites and rituals before using combinations of installation art, intervention, music, drama, movement and poetry to devise a performative response to the various (geographical, ecological, economic, historical, architectural, cultural, artistic…) contexts in which we find ourselves.

1918 meant the end of the First World War. This had an effect on the lives and literary output of writers and poets. The first part of the day is to look at how and why the First World War ended. Therefore the political and military events of 1918 will be investigated and form a framework for the next session.
The second part of the workshop is to look at how the war and the events of 1918 affected writers and poets such as Vera Brittain, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen. There will be an opportunity to look at a range of poetry and writing. However the key issue is to understand how war both physically and psychologically affected individuals and therefore created a literary tradition all of its own because of the profound impact it had on some who took part.

The course will explore the art and architecture of Venice between 1400 and 1800. Starting with a virtual tour of the city via the paintings of Canaletto, we will look at Venice’s history, unique urban development and how the problems of building in a lagoon were overcome, and how it became a vital centre for art and publishing. Native American Indians endured a tumultuous time in the twentieth century. They achieved citizenship but this was a double edged sword and they not all the tribes wanted this. The New Deal and the Meriam Report affected their way of life. The termination policy which was pursued by the government and then abolished had some profound effects. Red Power developed and was influential for tribes from the 1960s onwards. These events will be examined to provide an understanding of how Native American Indians fit into the mosaic of the United States of America.
